Scene: After the wedding
Jase
You should have just called and asked your sister and her fiancé for directions.
Sophie
We’re still talking about this. Come on. They were following us, Jase. They didn’t know where they were going anymore than we did. Can we just drop it?
Jase
No! I’m pissed. You got us lost.
Sophie
For the last time, I did not get us lost. Did you know the way? No! So we were both lost.
Jase
But you wouldn’t call for directions.
Sophie
We got here alright didn’t we? Why did you hang up when I answered the phone last night? We both left the concert at the same time. I came home, and then you called. What did you want and why did you hang up when I answered?
Jase
What are you talking about? I didn’t call you.
Sophie
Yes you did, it said your family’s name on the caller ID.
Jase
It was probably my mom calling to find out where I was.
Sophie
Why would she call me? She didn’t even know we were together. You had already dropped me off at home and then you went home to change after the rehearsal dinner.
Jase
Good point.
Sophie
Then if it wasn’t you I wonder who else in your household would have wanted to call me. Oooh I bet it was Tucker. I wonder what Tucker wanted to talk about. Too bad I didn’t get to talk to him. Maybe no one was on the phone because I didn’t answer in time. (In a mocking tone.)
Jase
Tucker didn’t call you! I…
Sophie
I know. You called me. Maybe you just didn’t know what to say anymore when I answered.
Jase
Can we go home now?
Sophie
But there is still the dinner.
Jase
You never told me about the dinner.
Sophie
Yes I did! I called and asked whether you wanted chicken or beef. You said chicken. My cousin paid for a meal for you as a thank you for playing at her wedding. You have to stay and eat.
Jase
I never told my mom I was going to stay this long.
Sophie
It’s ok. I can call her.
(Takes her phone out and starts dialing.)
I can let her know that you forgot to tell her about the dinner. She’ll understand.
Jase
No!
(Pulls the phone out of her hand.)
Would you just stop it? I’m leaving. Are you coming with me?
Sophie
Yes!
Jase
Ok then. (pause) I’m sorry, I just felt uncomfortable at the wedding. I didn’t know anyone. On the drive back you and I can just talk without everyone else around.
Sophie
I get it. I’ve been meaning to ask you, what’s the deal with homecoming?
Jase
What about homecoming?
Sophie
Do you want to go with me? Are we going together?
Jase
I have to ask my parents. I’ll get back to you about that later.
Sophie
You’ve got to be kidding me. Why would you have to ask your parents? I want an answer. It’s very simple, yes or no.
Jase
Don’t you think we’ve been spending too much time together? The rehearsal, the rehearsal dinner, the dance, the wedding, the car rides! It’s been like eighteen of the last thirty-six hours. That’s half of the last thirty-six hours of my life!
Sophie
I know it’s been a lot, but we won’t be spending that much time together at school.
Jase
It’s just you constantly pressure me.
Sophie
To do what?
Jase
The dinner and just everything. Pressure, pressure, pressure!
Sophie
That’s a cheap excuse. I was just trying to be nice. I was going to talk to your mom so you could stay.
Jase
I didn’t want to. I just think you get the wrong idea of what we are. I don’t want to lead…
(Stops himself as he clearly did not mean this.)
Sophie
What are we then?
(Sophie goes into defensive mode.)
You assume a lot, don’t you? I have a lot of guy friends, don’t I?
Jase
Yes you do.
(In an almost whisper.)
Sophie
You thought you were ever more than that? Well you’re not. I was asking you to homecoming as my friend. Just a friend.
Jase
Sophie, I’m sorry.
Sophie
I’m leaving. I don’t need a ride home. I don’t want to talk anymore.
Jase
Sophie wait!
Sophie
What, Jase?
Jase
You will talk to me at school, right?
Sophie
Yeah Jase, I’ll talk to you.
Jase
(Sings – “Another Way to Make a Mistake”)
Another day another way to make a mistake.
To say what I don’t mean.
What she sees is beyond me.
I have no clue who I’m trying to be.
I should quit this mess because I can’t keep this up.
Constantly trapped in my self-sabotaging ways.
I hate myself even being near her.
She looks better with him anyways.
I guess that leaves no room for me.
Scene: Sophie and Jase talking at school
Jase
I’m going to play bass guitar in the pit for the public school’s musical. Are you going to come watch me?
Sophie
How am I supposed to watch? You’ll be in the pit.
Jase
Yeah, but I’ll wave to you. All throughout the show I’ll be waving, so you better be watching. I also have to hold up a fish on a stick for some production number. The fish will also be waving to you.
Sophie
Shouldn’t I be watching the actors?
Jase
Well who is more important – the actors or me?
Sophie
How can you be in the pit for the public school? You don’t go there.
Jase
I switched over there for the band program. There’s actually more than one person per instrument. It’s amazing. You should transfer over there for choir. You’re too talented to stay here.
Sophie
I’d have to wait until next semester.
Jase
I can arrange things for you. I’ll talk to the choir director and get you an audition.
Sophie
What if I don’t get in?
Jase
You’ll get in, trust me. Band is at the same time as choir, so I can drive you back and forth.
Sophie
You make everything so much better.
Scene: Jase and Delilah’s introduction – at musical rehearsal
Delilah
You’re new here aren’t you?
Jase
How could you tell?
Delilah
You had this “oh shit, I don’t know anyone” look.
Jase
Oh
Delilah
Well, I’m Delilah.
Jase
I’m Jase. I go to the Catholic school.
Delilah
So are you good in bed then?
Jase
Excuse me?
Delilah
I heard Catholics are good in bed.
Jase
I’ve never heard that before. Do you know if the soda machines are on out in the hall?
Delilah
They’re not, but you can have some of my lemonade.
Jase
Thanks, that’s very nice of you.
(Takes a sip and nearly spits the “lemonade” out.)
This isn’t…
Delilah
Yes it is. It just has other ingredients.
Jase
Like what?
Delilah
Vodka. Always a good choice.
Jase
Don’t you worry about getting caught?
Delilah
Not really. The teachers would probably rather pretend to not know. If I don’t supply the alcohol, than who will? The class depends on me. Tell me about yourself.
Jase
I have a band with my brothers.
Delilah
Oooh a rockstar in the making.
Jase
Yeah, not quite. Sometimes we play gigs at restaurants on the weekends.
Delilah
I bet you have so many groupies.
Jase
Why is that?
Delilah
Because you’re pretty hott. Do you have a girlfriend?
Jase
Not in so many words. I don’t know what she is.
Delilah
What’s her name?
Jase
Sophie.
Delilah
How do you know her?
Jase
She asked my brother to homecoming. Then we started talking, and became whatever we are now.
Delilah
She’s using you.
Jase
You don’t even know her. Why would you say that?
Delilah
You met her because she likes your brother. If you talk to her it gets her closer to him. Does she come over to your house?
Jase
Sometimes.
Delilah
Is he always there?
Jase
He does live there.
Delilah
How far have you gone with her?
Jase
She’s not like that. She’s a few years younger than me.
Delilah
Well then what fun is that?
Jase
We talk. She gets me.
Delilah
It’s all just a game to her. You’ll realize that when she’s gone, and then you can sit and think about all the time you wasted.
Jase
Sometimes I wonder if that’s what is going on.
Delilah
Sometimes I wonder what people sleep in.
Jase
You really have a one track mind don’t you? Absolutely no sensor whatsoever.
Delilah
You’d be lying if you said you didn’t wonder what innocent little Sophie wore to bed.
Jase
Beyond the point.
Delilah
So what do you wear?
Jase
Boxers.
Delilah
I like to sleep naked. Clothes are just so confining. I mean really, what’s their point anyways.
Jase
I could name a few reasons.
Delilah
I walk around my house completely naked at times. Great visual isn’t it?
Jase
You walk around like that when no-one is home. Right?
Delilah
No. I could care less who is home. Hell, I look good. Here, you know what? I’m going to give you my phone number. I like you, I think we could work something out.
Jase
Work what out?
Delilah
Give me a call and I guess you’ll find out.
(Jase takes the phone number and walks away.)
(Sings – “On a Saturday Night”)
Blending into the leather couch.
So rigid and cold.
Listening to the thoughts of someone else.
Can I try to make you smile today?
I could be your vision, be your muse.
Just to be in your world.
I would live through the songs you sing on a Saturday night.
Is this what you say to a guy who has it all?
Your light draws my mind.
I’d take the chance of falling.
You could be a mirror of me.
I could be your vision, be your muse.
Just to be in your world.
I would live through the songs you sing on a Saturday night.
Is this what you say to a guy who has it all?
Don’t you see how much you shine?
What I’d give for you to let me in.
Scene: Sophie’s house on Halloween
(Door bell rings)
Sophie
Time to hand out some candy to the kiddies.
(Opens door)
Seth
I believe we’ve met before. Would you care to join me in the dark world of the undead?
Sophie
Seth aren’t you too old to be trick or treating?
(Sets bowl down and sits down on couch)
Seth
No. Can’t you just feel my 17th century charm?
Sophie
I sense the failed charming attempts of the 17 years of your existence. Why are you still standing outside?
Seth
I’m not able to enter your house without an invitation.
Sophie
Are you serious? Seth you’re tan, and drinking a cream soda does not make you immortal.
Seth
(Enters the house)
Thanks for ruining my fun. I wanted to see my best friend. It’s not like we go to the same school. I don’t exactly see you all of the time. I figured we could watch a scary movie or something.
Sophie
Sure. Is there a reason you brought your guitar oh ancient vampiric one.
Seth
Well yes there is. I’m glad you asked. I made a mix cd for you, and included a new song I wrote called “Songs for November”.
Sophie
It’s October.
Seth
Well pretend it’s tomorrow. So I brought my guitar to sing it for you. You need the full effect before you hear the recording.
(Sings - “Songs for November” - Co-written by Joel Stepanek)
Just another verse for a chorus that I never got to write.
Another strum on a string and a voice in the night.
One more chance to make you see that the only notes I ever sang
were ones just to make you believe.
All my songs were for you if you would only open your heart to me.
These are your songs for November.
Bleeding heart stitched together.
Trying to find your place in life.
When you feel like everyone has left you.
Know that I am standing by to remind you of who you’re meant to be.
When the November cold is all you feel.
Yet a moment out of tune was all that I could give.
Trading off my awkward moments for a chance to really live.
So I’ll take your time in stride to sing a song by your bedside.
You’re in my my dreams and I won’t breathe until you see that.
These are your songs for November.
Bleeding heart stitched together.
Trying to find your place in life.
When you feel like everyone has left you.
Know that I am standing by to remind you of who you’re meant to be.
When the November cold is all you feel.
The shadow at your back and the music in your night.
I could be your harmony.
Just let me inside your inspiration.
I could be the key to your heart if you would only fall onto me.
Sophie
I love it! Hey, just curious, you have class with Jase right?
Seth
I don’t go out during hours of sunlight.
Sophie
Seth! Be serious!
Seth
Yes I have one class with him. Why?
Sophie
Do you think you could talk to him?
Seth
About what? It’s not like we’re friends.
Sophie
You could try to be his friend, and then kind of find out what he thinks about me.
Seth
Do you really still like him? I just don’t get what you see in him.
Sophie
Yes I still like him. That’s not even in question.
Seth
Ok, I’ll see what I can find out. I’m not happy about this though.
Sophie
You’re happy when I’m happy though, right?
Seth
I’m reluctantly answering yes. There are better guys out there than Jase.
Sophie
Like who?
Seth
Let’s just watch the movie. I bet you five dollars you scream once before the movie is over.
Sophie
You’re on.
